National Squash championships takes centre court at the V and A Waterfront

The City of Cape Town is a proud host city and sponsor of the Growthpoint SA National Squash Championships currently taking place at the V and A Waterfront. Read more below:
South Africa’s premier individual tournament is played in an all-glass court, placed in the Centre Court at the V and A Waterfront, creating a spectacular setting for the country’s top senior and junior players to demonstrate their talents.
The tournament, sanctioned by the national federation Squash South Africa, features 16 of the country’s top squash players in the men and women’s categories.
In addition to the main event, an U17 national section is running simultaneously to decide SA’s best players in this category.
‘Cape Town is proud to be able to provide a stage for professional and junior squash players to sharpen their skills and participate in the national championship. I went down to the V and A Waterfront earlier this week and the glass court, built in the middle of the shopping centre, looks spectacular and provides onlookers with a remarkable view of the action on the court.
‘This tournament is just one in a string of events that have taken place in our city over the last four weeks. From Fame Week Africa, Comic Con, to the Cape Town Cycle Tour, the Cape Epic, Miss South Africa and the Cape Town Marathon this past weekend, it is a good indication that the events industry is slowly building its recovery from the pandemic. This is wonderful and welcome news for the tourism sector as well as the 30 000 plus people who rely on the events industry to make a living,’ said the City Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security Alderman JP Smith.
The Growthpoint SA National Squash Championships kicked off on Wednesday and will run until Saturday when the finals will be hosted.
Games take place at the V and A Waterfront from 08:00 until 18:00 on tournament days.
In between the games on the court, the tournament will also run skills development programmes for junior squash players from areas in Cape Town.
